  • WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS

    Every event in the universe has a cause. Those causes arise from functions at different system levels. To give an example, an efficiency problem you experience in your business may be caused by an upper system (for example, managerial decisions, or the customer), as well as by sub-systems or components (for example, a worn belt or bearing). Functional Analysis is one of the tools we use to analyze the causes of problems in R&D or Innovation projects. It allows us to see the interactions between such systems, subsystems and components, and the relationships between them. It is very simple to draw; First of all, we draw the subsystems and components of the system we will focus on as boxes; It is important for us to go into as much detail as possible here. In the second step, we draw the function of each component to each other. The important thing to note here is to show not only useful functions, but also harmful functions. (functions can be such as pushing, pulling, energy transfer, information transfer etc) You can use arrows with different colors and features according to the function types (for example, useful functions are green, harmful functions are red). For example, the function of the car engine is to move the car, but it has also the harmful function of throwing poisonous gases into the air.     9 Boxes is a TRIZ tool used to identify the scope of innovation we want to focus on and find solutions across different time periods (past, present, future) and scale (upper system, system and subsystem levels). It is generally beneficial to focus on the task at hand to make our work easier because doing so makes sense to increase our work efficiency and keep our thinking within reasonable limits.   • BREAK YOUR COMFORT ZONE WITH SCAMPER ANALYSIS

    Thinking that the solution to the problem will be inside their own field of experience and expertise and not turning to alternative technologies/fields to develop new concepts is defined as "psychological inertia". Psychological inertia can be caused by the following reasons: Habits Beliefs History/Traditions Procedures/Regulations Rules Education For these reasons, our brain usually directs us to solve our problems inside our comfort zone. Getting out of Psychological Inertia allows you to get out of your comfort zone. However, our brain works the other way around, forcing us to stay in our comfort zone. There are many different tools to get out of Psychological Inertia. I will talk about SCAMPER Analysis, which we use especially in Innovation and Lean 6 Sigma projects when vertical problem solving methods do not work for us or the solutions we find in this way are costly. SCAMPER Analysis consists of the initials of 7 English words and allows you to develop new ideas by allowing you to look at the subject you focus on from different angles: Substitute: asks you to identify alternatives for materials, processes, techniques, and other items you are currently using. Combine: prompts you to combine alternatives for materials, processes, techniques, and other items you are currently using. Adapt: ​​entails searching for ways to adapt a material, process, technique and elements you already have to solve your problems. Modify/Magnify/Minify: requires enlarging, reducing, or disassembling a material, process, techniques, and elements that you already have. Put to other use: makes you think of alternative uses for your product or service to help you solve your problem. Eliminate: asks you to find ways to get rid of some or all of a material, process, technique, and element you already have.   • BUILD EMPATHY WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS USING EMPATHY MAP

    One of the first things we do in both Innovation and Lean 6 Sigma projects is to identify customer requests. Among the tools we use for this is the Empathy Map. Empathy Map is a useful tool in identifying these customer requests, especially if the project is focused on a solution that appeals to the end user. Its implementation is quite simple: Draw the Empathy Map template Distribute post-its to all members of the team Everyone should write how they will respond to the problem by empathizing with the customer on the papers in their hands and paste them on the relevant places (think, feel, hear) on the board. Keep writing, even if not all customer needs are mutually supportive. (e.g. the car should consume less fuel at higher speeds) When all ideas are finished, combine and prioritize ideas. You can also use CTQ tree to specify generic needs of the customers.   • LEAN 6 SIGMA GREEN BELT PROJECT COACHINGS COMPLETED AT YEDAŞ

    The 1st Lean 6 Sigma Green Belt wave project coachings, which started in October 2021, at Yeşilırmak Electricity Distribution Inc., were completed on April 20, 2022. The projects will be completed with the management presentations to be made in June and the monitoring phase will begin. In order for the projects to be successful, they must have proven the sustainability of the improvements carried out for at least 6 months.
